According to the American Forest & Paper Association,” Paper recovery for recycling is a national success because of the commitment millions of Americans make each day to recycling at home, at work, or at school.” –but what should we recycle and what should we shred?
When it comes to office paper, employers must educate their employees on what is considered confidential or sensitive consumer/patient information and what is not. In other words, what information if not properly disposed of would put the company or its clients at risk for privacy violations, legal action, or consumer identity theft? We must understand that with most recycling programs, the paper is collected in non-secure receptacles until collected and transported from your location in its whole form. This process provides a window of opportunity for potential breaches.
Therefore, things such as folders, books, magazines, greeting cards and mailing supplies should go into the recycling containers. Everything else such as employee pay stubs, bank statements, medical records, SSN# or credit card numbers, tax forms, pre-approved credit card offers, etc. should be shredded by partnering with a professional secure document destruction company, such as, Total Shred Solutions, that will assist you in establishing a secure document destruction program utilizing secure collection containers.
